The Lone Star State Dulcimer Society Newsletter

April 11, 2015

April Meeting:  The April meeting of the Lone Star State Dulcimer Society will be held on April 11th, 2015. Betty Odom will be heading up the Mountain Dulcimer folks at the April Meeting.  They will be taking a look at what they learned at Winterfest among other things.  Please bring tab for any favorite tunes from Winterfest to share with the group.  Here’s what Linda says about the HD workshops: The 1 PM class for HD players will be the easier one of the two. We'll have some easy D tunes selected from the list on the website, plus the no-more-than-3 chords some can play as back-up. Work on whatever part of that you wish. Then, at 2 we'll have the potluck, where you'll get to try out 2 new recipes I've found. Then, at 3, back to the hammers where we'll work on a new, more advanced arrangement.  I'm thinking The Water Is Wide, which can be downloaded from Lindalowethompson.com and is under Arrangements. The less advanced players can learn the tune. The more advanced players can add the harmonies I've written for it. I'll show you how to make that into as easy or hard

an arrangement as suits your taste and skill level. The main trick to that tune is to make it so that the harmonies always compliment the melody but don't overwhelm it.

Glen Rose:  We are finalizing our plans for the 34th Annual Lone Star State Dulcimer Festival, May 8-10, 2015. Headliners this year are No Strings Attached, The Gary Gallier Band, and Don Pedi.  Attached is the latest “tentative” schedule available.  This attachment only has the performance schedule.  The workshop schedule will come with your May newsletter so you can plan your weekend around what you want to learn, who you want hear, and where you want to go.  We have a wide variety of talent coming this year.  So much so that we are planning to start earlier on Friday than we ever have.  There are still a couple of spots that we are planning to fill that are marked as “TBA”.  The festival is held at Oakdale Park in Glen Rose, Texas.  I would write the directions here but I know you’re only going to google it, mapquest it, or gps it on your cell phone.  However you get there be sure to not miss a single note.

LSSDS MEETINGS -JANUARY 2015 - DECEMBER 2015

All meetings will be held at the First Christian Church (FCC) of Irving, located at 114 W. Grauwyler Road. Grauwyler is just south of Airport Freeway and the church is just east of O’Connor Road.  This is a schedule that lists the tentative dates and times of the monthly LSSDS meetings through December 2015. They are listed as tentative because we may need to be flexible should a church activity conflict with our meeting. This schedule/map will be posted at www.lssds.com. Any changes in meeting times or dates will be posted on lssds.com asap. Any questions, give me (Joe) a call at 972-986-6371 or send me an e-mail at jmm55@verizon.net .

The 14th Annual Palestine Old Time Music and Dulcimer Festival:  Old Pal was held on March 26-28, 2015 in Palestine, Texas.  It was another great festival with lots of old time music and dulcimer playing.  Jerry and Margaret Wright do a great job with this festival.  There was lots of jamming, workshops, music and most importantly fun and frivolity.  If you missed it you really missed out on a good one.
