Linda Thompson has passed away
From Dana Hamilton, 26 Sep 2019:
We just received word that our own Linda Thompson passed away last night in her sleep. Linda wrote probably the very first book on how to actually play the hammer dulcimer. She was a well known and widely regarded teacher of hammer dulcimer and led workshops all across the country. Linda was a concert pianist that took to the dulcimer immediately and became quite an accomplished player. She and her husband, Wesley, shared their music through many festivals and workshops. Linda started the Winter Festival of Acoustic Music back in the 80's and held it for over 25 years. She ran the dulcimer contests at our annual Lone Star State Dulcimer Festival and performed and taught workshops throughout the 38 years that we have had the festival. She was also a past president, vice president, treasurer and workshop leader at the monthly meetings of the Lone Star State Dulcimer Society. We have suffered a great loss and she will be greatly missed. Please remember Wesley, sons Ben and Alex, daughter Lisa and all the grandchildren in your prayers.
From Sandy McFalls via Dana Hamilton, 28 Sep 2019:
Dear Dana, this is Sandy (Cain) McFalls in NC, a friend of Linda’s. What shocking and heart breaking news this morning. I know she wasn’t feeling good this week but it certainly didn’t sound serious. My heart is breaking. Linda was like a big sister to me, talking me off the wall endless times as I raised my kids, navigated marriage, started my business. We’ve talked regularly for all these years and she is my last letter writing friend. She was a one in a million friend and my life wouldn’t be what it has been without her guidance. I have tried to call Wesley but no one is answering and I only have her cell. I talked to Linda a few weeks ago and she was excited about learning to play mountain dulcimer. Her cheerfulness made me so happy because she’d been kinda down.
I’m still in shock and I know your dulcimer community there must be realing. Thank you for posting this message on the LSSDS site. I wish I could be there for her service. I will miss her terribly.
Sevices set. From Dana Hamilton:
We just got word that the funeral for Linda Thompson will be held on Friday, October 4th at 1 p.m. Services will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park, 3801 Roselawn Drive, Denton, Texas, 76207. There will only be a graveside service. All are invited to attend. Flowers sent to the funeral home will be transported to the graveside service. In lieu of flowers Alex mentioned that they would like donations sent to the food bank that Linda and Wesley supported and worked with. Alex was working on the obituary and said the information will be included with that. We will send another notice when we have that information.
