The Lone Star State Dulcimer Society Newsletter

November 8, 2014 @ 1:00 p.m.

November Meeting:  Make note of the time change for this meeting.  Start time is 1:00 p.m.  The November meeting of the Lone Star State Dulcimer Society will be on November 8th at the First Christian Church, 114 W. Grauwyler Road, in Irving, Texas.  The mountain dulcimer group has the honor of being led by Betty Odum.  As we usually do in our November meetings, the plan is for folks to bring a Christmas tune or two to share with the group.  Bring TAB if you can.  Betty will choose a tune or two to teach from her vast catalog of tunes as well.  For hammered dulcimer:  Beginning at 1:00, Pot Luck 2:00, and Advanced 3:00.

Time Changes:  We are changing the times of the November and January meetings to 1PM.  We talked about it a couple of meetings ago and everyone who was there was in agreement.  Those are during the winter months when it colder and gets dark early and most thought having them during daylight hours was a good idea.  So, mark your calendars appropriately.  If you come at 6 you will have the privilege of seeing us drive off.

The Winter Creek Reunion:  If you missed this one you missed a real barn burner.  It was  a great festival put on by our friends the Red River Valley Dulcimer Club.  I don’t know how they can top this year’s festival but they are already planning the next one.  Mark your calendars for the second weekend of October 2015.

The Last Annual Winter Festival, February 20 & 21, 2015:  Yes, you read it right.  This will be our last Annual Winter Festival of Acoustic Music.  Let’s try to make the “Last” festival a humdinger.  Invite anyone and everyone you can.  It would be awesome to end on the “best ever”.  Mark your calendars right now.  February 20-21, 2015.  Headliners for this year’s festival are:  ANDY YOUNG & Al TAUBER, LARRY CONGER, AARON O’ROURKE, STEPHEN HUMPHRIES & JESSE ISLEY.  Other featured performers include:   John Cardascia, Sue Carpenter, Russell Cook, Chuck & Karen Daniels, Gary Gallier, Dana Hamilton,

Princess Harris, David & Annette Lindsey, Bob McClure, Carolyn Marlette & Van (Doc) Gardner, Joe Morgan & David Moran, Fred Moss, Karl Neumann, Scott Odena, Betty Odum, Deb Porter, Nancy Price, Irma Reeder Lucille Reilly, Mary Ellen Robertson, Mark Shelton, Wendy Songe, Noel Tardy & Kate McLennan, Wesley & Linda Lowe Thompson, Cheryl & David Turner, and Charles Whitmer.  Now that’s quite a line up.  Bring everyone and enjoy a great festival, great music, and great fun.

Possible New Club In The Austin Area:  I received an email from Joann Robison in the Austin area.  They are looking for dulcimer players and instructors.  Here’s what she has to say:  “I live on the west side of Austin near Lakeway.  At Lake Travis United Methodist the choir director and her husband both play mountain dulcimer and she (Patty Highland) has worked some with a hammered dulcimer. We would like to get together a group for jamming, learning, sharing gospel and traditional music.  I have talked with Margaret Wright and we have set up (still possibly tentative but likely) a one day workshop for Feb 7, 2015 at our church to kickoff the interest and offer something to the community.  Margaret will lead classes in mountain dulcimer and we hope to do some shape note singing the evening before.  I know of a couple of people interested in hammered dulcimer and would like to offer entry level instruction in that instrument also.  Are you or do you know anyone who might be interested in leading such a class?  Also we would need to know what reimbursement would be asked.  If you want to talk more please call me at 512-971-0251 or email at”  If you or someone you know can help them out contact Joann.

They’re Serious Too!  Here’s a note from the aforementioned Patty Highland.  “Years ago, David and I were part of the Austin dulcimer society – but it didn’t last very long, and we have lost track of dulcimer players in Austin.  I am currently the director of Music at Lake Travis United Methodist Church in Austin (Lakeway, actually).  The music committee at the church is toying with the idea of trying to offer some dulcimer lessons and/or jam sessions here at the church (like the church in Austin used to offer to the Austin Dulcimer society…)  To get this started, we thought it would be great to invite a dulcimer player to play in our worship services on a Sunday, and follow that with a workshop class and jam session.  But, like I mentioned, we’ve lost touch with any dulcimer players in Austin.  Do you know of any in Austin or close by?  (We’re trying to start this without having to pay lots for travel, housing, etc)  I know Cliff Moses was in San Antonio; however, I can’t find him or a web site  - is he still playing and still in the area?  Any suggestions of musicians, teachers, performers that you can send my way would be appreciated.  Patty Highland, Dir. Of Music Ministries , Lake Travis UMC, Austin 512-266-9877 or email at”.

Tuning Help Needed:  Faye Mershon lives in the Irving area and needs some help getting her hammer dulcimer back in tune so she can find all the tunes she left in it.  If you live in that area and would not mind helping someone get back to playing you can contact her at:  It's a David Lindsey spinet.

Glen Rose:  We have started on The Lone Star State Dulcimer Festival.  Featured performers are:  No Strings Attached, the Gary Gallier Band.  More as it becomes available.

The Old Mill Music Festival, 2014:  Join Lloyd and April Wright in the heart of the Davy Crockett National Forest on November 7-8, 2014 in Kenard, Texas for the third annual Old Mill Music Festival.  Come and see some of the best in the business at this all acoustic two day event. This years pe         rformers include:  Spencer and Rains, Roy Book Binder, Rice Festival Queens, Pipp Gillette and Lloyd Wright, Stephen Seifert, Kristyn Harris, Bottom Dollar String Band, Wright Family. The Bayou Hotshots, Double Eagle String Band, Steve and Sheryl Hartz, The Sawmill Vagrants, David and Annette Lindsey, Wendy Songe, Grampa’s Legacy.  There are workshops planned and even a pre-festival workshop by Stephen Seifert.  For more information you can look it up at:
